MONTE CRISTO SLIDERS RECIPE

Paris in the early 1900s, I am sure it was a wild time. Same with Southern California when Disneyland was opening its gates to wide-eyed children and adults alike. However, House Hunk was not even a twinkle in anyone’s eye at either point in time. So, naturally, I missed the incipient stages of the Croque Monsieur in France, and its Americanized sandwich spawn, The Monte Cristo. Where was I when I first experienced the Monte Cristo? Well, legend has it, I was at Bennigan’s in Boston sometime in the very late 1990s. That’s right, I was going toe to toe with a monstrous French-inspired classic at a restaurant that prides itself on its Irish Hospitality. Go figure! So, if an Irish-themed restaurant that dishes up casual American fare, can serve a French sandwich that was reimagined by diners across SoCal…then I can darn sure make a slider out of it! I present to you: The Monte Cristo Slider. Order up!

WHAT IS A MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH?

The Monte Cristo is an Americanized version of the French Croque Monsieur sandwich. The Croque Monsieur was being served in cafes in Paris in the early 1900s, and as Europeans made their way to the United States, the sandwich traveled with them. Fast forward to the opening of Disneyland in California, and this sandwich was all over Southern California. Diners in the theme park and just outside were offering the Monte Cristo on their menus. The original Monte Cristo consists of ham and cheese between two pieces of french toast. The sandwich is dipped in eggs and then fried on a flat griddle or skillet. This Monte Cristo Slider has some similar flavors as the original sandwich, however, it is scaled down into a convenient little package.

Oh my gosh, Monte Cristos are the perfect blend of savory and sweet. The meat, cheese, and biscuits have the perfect saltiness that pairs with the maple syrup and powdered sugar topping. If you dip it in the strawberry jam, there is an added level of fruitiness that is perfectly tart. I might need to have one of these right now, yum!

MINI MONTE CRISTOS INGREDIENTS

  • Pillsbury Grands Buttermilk biscuits (8 count) – 1 can
  • Black forest ham – 6 slices
  • Deli turkey – 6 slices
  • Swiss cheese – 6 slices
  • Butter – 1 tablespoon
  • Maple syrup – 1 tablespoon
  • Powdered sugar – 1 tablespoon
  • Strawberry jam, for dipping

CAN YOU MAKE HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS AHEAD OF TIME?

You can prepare all the ingredients and assemble the sandwiches a few hours in advance. I would hold off on baking them until right before you are ready to eat. The fresher the better with these sliders!

CAN YOU FREEZE MONTE CRISTO SLIDERS?

I would refrain from freezing these Monte Cristos. This is a sandwich that is best enjoyed shortly after being removed from the oven.
