What is boursin cheese?

Boursin cheese is a soft, creamy cheese that can come in a variety of flavors.

People often describe its texture and taste as similar to cream cheese.

François Boursin created the cheese in Normandy in 1957.

The first flavor was garlic and herb.

Well created is actually a bit of a stretch. What he did do was commercialize a very simple, very common French dish- fresh cheese mixed with herbs.

Since then, additional flavors include cranberry and spice, pepper, and shallot and chive.

For this recipe, I make a homemade version of the famous cheese using cream cheese and a delicious blend of herbs and spices.

Ingredients

To make this herbed cheese spread you’ll need:

  • Cream cheese– Make sure to use full fat cream cheese for best flavor and let it soften on the counter prior to making this.
  • Butter– Use salted butter that you’ve let soften on the counter. If you use unsalted butter instead, you may have to add a pinch of salt.
  • Garlic– Mince it or press it.
  • Dried herbs– oregano, basil, thyme, chives, tarragon and parsley
  • Freshly ground black pepper

How to Make

Part of what I love about this recipe is just how easy it is!

To make it, just add all of the ingredients into a medium sized mixing bowl.

Then, use a hand mixer to whip them together until evenly combined and smooth.

Serve the soft cheese at room temperature with crisp vegetables, crackers, or other dippables- and you’re done!

Serving Suggestions

You can serve this creamy, soft cheese with your favorite veggie sticks, like carrots, celery, or bell peppers.

You could also dip mushrooms, sliced radishes, cherry tomatoes, or any other veggie you like.

Crackers and crusty bread are also great serving companions for this cheese.

Or you could spread the cheese evenly over a bagel or roll.

If you like, you can use this as a substitute for store bought Boursin cheese in your favorite recipes.

One of my favorites is my mashed potatoes with boursin cheese.

It goes great at holiday dinners or any meal when you really want to jazz up the mashed potatoes.

If you are serving this for a party, I recommend providing a variety of dippables including veggies and crackers.

The more variety you provide, the more likely you’ll please everyone there!

Storing

You can make this cheese ahead of time for a party or get together.

To store, spoon the cheese into an airtight container and place in the fridge for up to 2 to 3 weeks.
