  1. #2 Best Public High Schools in CaliforniaTroy High SchoolFullerton Joint Union High, CA•9-12•Rating 4.08 out of 5 979 reviewsAlum: The best part is the college readiness. The teachers really go the extra mile to make sure that you are ready, even if your grades may drop. Help is always there if you're looking for it. Counselors, teachers, peers, clubs, these connections can be made if you're proactive. Occasionally, you may get a bad teacher but the networking options are plentiful. The facilities are innately slightly worse when compared to other schools, mainly because of the small size of the campus. Ever since the school received funding for food, the quality has drastically improved, for both lunch and break. However, if you're late to the cafeteria, sometimes the old cafeteria food will be served instead. Restrooms are almost guaranteed to be destroyed, except for the athletic ones. Athletic attention is mostly funneled towards football, soccer, and basketball. This means weight room is almost exclusively reserved for them, even if they are not in season. However, the community in athletics is supportive.... They also do a good job of setting up school events. Academically, Gunn tries to ensure that students aren't overworking themselves. However, I would like to see more opportunities for AP classes for underclassmen so that students don't stack all their AP classes as upperclassmen. 4. #4 Best Public High Schools in CaliforniaCanyon Crest AcademySan Dieguito Union High School District, CA•9-12•Rating 4.28 out of 5 643 reviewsSenior: I did not realize just how much a high school culture could shape my life. At CCA, known for "its okay to be weird", the overall environment is supportive and structured. The teachers (most teachers) are inspirational and experienced. They know how much stress is placed on students in this day and age, and they are very good about making sure their students are caring for their well being, not just getting good grades. I realize that going to CCA was a good thing for me, and that certain aspects of high school that people often see displayed on TV and movies, like football teams and major drama, are definitely not a thing at CCA. Everyone seems to be marching to the same tune and knows just how much everyone wants to succeed. The changes I would like to see are more diversity with the teachers and students. Being an African American female, I feel alone at times in what I am going through. Not many people can relate which makes it tough. But ultimately I am grateful for CCA!... The productions that are put up here at CSArts are so different than your typical high school because we get to work with professionals who are currently working in the industry. We're also able to do material that's more challenging and forces us to step out of our comfort zone, which is so important as a growing artist. For a student to do well and enjoy his/her experience at The Science Academy STEM Magnet, they do have to *want* to be there and take school seriously though. 13. #13 Best Public High Schools in CaliforniaLowell High SchoolSan Francisco Unified, CA•9-12•Rating 3.8 out of 5 1,101 reviewsSenior: Lowell High School is known for its academic competitiveness. As a high school senior here, it definitely lives up to that expectation. Many of the students here are very academically motivated and that makes me better as a student, because I feel I have to match the standard and work equally as hard. I feel it has definitely made me more prepared for college. Although the competitiveness has forced me to be a better student, it has made college admissions way harder because there are many people with higher GPAs than you applying to the same colleges. From what I have heard from students who attend other high schools, I can compare that Lowell has faster-paced classes, and study harder concepts. The teachers here are typically very qualified, but might not support you individually very much due to the amount of work, and larger class sizes. There are many sports and clubs to join from. Many different clubs, activities, sports, and classes in which students can pick of their own choice. Teachers are nice, of course there are some that are very hard, but everyone gets through them. This school is very academic and athletic orientated, and mainly focuses on that for their students. Large campus for everyone. A change I would love is to make it a bit cleaner and more email communication. The bathrooms were always a bit dirty, and trash was everywhere, the place is also just very old and needs a lot of updating especially with the air conditioning units. When I went there, I remember rarely getting email updates about anything school or my classes related, I would have to hear updates from my mom. Everest AcademySan Diego Unified, CA•K-12•Rating 4.3 out of 5 50 reviewsParent: This is our first year at Mt Everest after a relocation from the East Coast. My elementary-aged girls are absolutely thriving at MEA. Both went formerly to a small private school, and while fine, weren’t entirely happy. Now they BEG to go to school and race to get into the car. It’s a hybrid program in the elementary, where kids go to school one morning a week and up to several optional afternoons for clubs and enrichment. Teachers give you the curriculum and you work at home with your child independently. Middle school is more traditional in that you can drop your kids off in the morning three days a week, and then high school functions like a college campus. I’m a former teacher who has seen a lot of different school, public, private, and charter. This school has impressed me greatly. While they offer all subjects and a myriad of student-led clubs, the main focus of the school is STEM, hence the technological focus. The Robotics team is considered the equivalent of the varsity football team, which segues into the fact that my school also lacks sports teams, other than the highly-ranked running team. This proposes some issues, as it's difficult to experience traditional high school events such as football games, large school dances, and more. However, the tight-knit community I've found while attending this school has allowed for close friendships and lasting memories, even if they differ from those of large, populated high schools. 25. #24 Best Public High Schools in CaliforniaOxford AcademyAnaheim Union High School District, CA•7-12•Rating 3.65 out of 5 679 reviewsSenior: Oxford Academy has allowed me to take courses with educators that will prepare me for college life, I do 100% believe the transition will be smooth. The different clubs here are easy ways to make friends with similar interests and/or personalities, and sports are fun if you are willing to commit to them fully. However, because we host some of California's brightest, that means most of the courses are academically challenging and there are many courses not offered at Oxford that are at other schools, such as woodshop and culinary. The campus is one of the smallest in our district, and our sports are very underwhelming at the state level. While the school does prepare you for college-level pressure and workload, it's almost as if part of the school culture is its competitive nature. Oxford Academy is a good school when you have social and moral support from close friends, but many do cave due to lack of time management with the heavy homework load....
